Ulm, Braun and good form

A systematic, matter-of-fact design from Ulm, Braun and Swiss graphics.

From 1953 the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Ulm taught a design based on systems and analysis. Braun hired Dieter Rams in 1955, and the SK 4 of 1956 began a long line of austere appliances. Otl Aicher shaped Lufthansa's identity and the pictograms for the Munich Olympics of 1972.

In Switzerland a strict graphic style with grids and sans-serif type developed, in which Helvetica of 1957 became the best-known typeface. In 1957 Vitra began making Herman Miller's furniture in Europe.
