Muji, fashion and quiet design
Goods without a brand, avant-garde fashion and objects so simple that they almost disappear.
Muji started in 1980 as a no-brand label, with simple, cheap goods. Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto shocked Paris in 1981 with black, asymmetrical clothes, and Issey Miyake developed pleated fabrics. Shiro Kuramata made poetic furniture in acrylic and steel mesh.
Naoto Fukasawa and Kenya Hara have given Muji a calm, self-evident design. Nendo has made thousands of objects with humour and lightness. The emoji, drawn for mobile phones in 1999, has spread all over the world.
