Modernism and Scandinavian Design
Functionalism came to Norway in the 1930s, and after the war Norwegian cutlery and enamel bowls became part of Scandinavian Design.
In the interwar years functionalist houses were built in Oslo, and the porcelain factory Porsgrund, founded in 1885, hired artists such as Nora Gulbrandsen, who gave its services modern forms.
After the war Tias Eckhoff made cutlery such as Maya of 1961, with simple, well-balanced forms, and Grete Prytz Kittelsen enamelled bowls and jewellery in strong colours. Norway took part in the exhibition Design in Scandinavia, and Norwegian objects were shown in Milan and New York.
