The Oscarian period

Factories grew, middle-class homes filled with dark furniture in the Renaissance and Rococo revivals, and Sweden took part in the world's fairs.

Railways, sawmills and factories transformed Sweden in the second half of the nineteenth century. Gustavsberg, Rörstrand and the glassworks of Småland produced on a large scale, and furniture factories made period furniture in series. Middle-class homes were furnished with heavy curtains, upholstered furniture and different styles in different rooms – Rococo in the drawing room, Renaissance in the dining room.

Swedish companies showed their goods at the world's fairs, and Stockholm held a large art and industry exhibition in 1866. The Society of Crafts and Design and the Technical School, forerunner of Konstfack, worked for better design.
