Egg chair

An armchair that encloses the sitter, designed for a hotel in Copenhagen.

Arne Jacobsen designed the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen and also everything in it, from lamps to cutlery. The Egg of 1958 was made for the hotel lobby by Fritz Hansen.

The chair is modelled like a sculpture and used new foam technology. It forms a small room of its own within the large room.

Materials: Moulded foam shell, padding and fabric or leather upholstery, aluminium base

Manufacture: The shell is moulded and upholstered by hand; the base is a swivelling star of cast aluminium.

The wings that screen off sound and glances in a hotel lobby.

The thin star-shaped base that makes the chair seem to float.

The seams in the upholstery, which follow the curves of the shell.
