Bauhaus chess set
Chess pieces whose form shows how each piece may move.
Josef Hartwig made the chess set in Weimar in the 1920s. He removed the traditional figures and let the form describe the movement.
The set shows the Bauhaus idea that function should decide form – even in a game.
Materials: Wood, partly painted
Manufacture: Made in the Bauhaus wood workshop.
The rook is a cube, because it moves straight.
The bishop has a diagonal cross, because it moves diagonally.
The king and queen are built from cubes and spheres.
