Dish by Thorvald Bindesbøll

An earthenware dish with bold, almost abstract patterns in black and white, long before Modernism.
Bindesbøll made ceramics at Københavns Lervarefabrik in Valby from the 1880s. His patterns are often cited as among the earliest abstract decoration in Europe. Examples are in Designmuseum Danmark.
Materials: Earthenware with slip and lead glaze
Manufacture: The pattern scratched through a layer of slip (sgraffito) at a pottery in Valby outside Copenhagen.
The large, swinging fields of contrasting colour that depict nothing.
The rough handmade surface and the sparing palette.
