The Monkey

Kay Bojesen’s monkey of teak and limba from 1951 – a toy that became a classic of Nordic design.

The silversmith Kay Bojesen began making wooden toys for his children and wanted them to be fun to hold. The monkey of 1951 can hang by an arm or leg from a shelf or lamp.

It became part of Danish post-war design and is still made. The design is protected, so only a drawing is shown.

Materials: Teak and limba

Manufacture: Turned and joined wooden parts; arms and legs attached with sprung fittings.

Two woods: dark teak and pale limba.

Hands and feet shaped as hooks so the monkey can hang.

Markings under a foot on later production.
