Gaudí’s oak armchair, shaped to the body like an organic sculpture.

Gaudí designed the furniture for the office of Casa Calvet in Barcelona, a building he completed in 1898–1900. The armchairs are among the most sculptural things he made in wood. They are in the Museu del Modernisme Català and the Gaudí House Museum in Park Güell.

Materials: Solid oak

Manufacture: Oak carved in soft forms close to the body, unupholstered; the joints sculpted into one.

Seat, back and arms shaped to the body, without a single straight line.

The legs splay like roots, with feet resembling hooves.
