William Burges’s colourful medieval fantasy in the castle’s rooms.

The Marquess of Bute, one of the richest men of the time, had William Burges rebuild Cardiff Castle in medieval style. Burges built towers and rooms with a rich, imaginative decoration of painted ornaments and carved figures.

The interiors are one of the foremost examples of the Victorian Gothic Revival. Burges worked with many artists and craftsmen, who made the rooms into a whole.
