The green pencil of 1905 in a long range of grades – for draughtsmen, architects and artists.

The Castell 9000 was launched in 1905 by Faber-Castell in Stein, one of the oldest pencil companies. The green colour is said to have been chosen after the colours in Count Alexander zu Castell-Rüdenhausen’s coat of arms.

The pencil came in many grades and became the standard for technical drawing. It is still made.

Materials: Graphite and clay, cedar, green lacquer

Manufacture: Industrially made in Stein near Nuremberg; the leads were glued between two halves of wood.

Green lacquer, a hexagonal barrel and stamped lettering in gold or silver.

The grade, from very soft to very hard, stamped on the pencil.

The appearance of the lettering has changed slightly over the years.

A dark green hexagonal body with gold lettering and the hardness grade, for example HB or 2H, printed on one of the sides.
