Caxton’s advertisement

Caxton’s advertisement, William Caxton, printer
Raoul Lefèvre / William Caxton, Public domain

The oldest surviving printed advertisement in English, for a priests’ handbook.

Caxton offered buyers the Sarum Ordinal ‘good chepe’ at his shop in Westminster. The slip is a forerunner of the poster and is in the Bodleian Library in Oxford.

Materials: Paper, letterpress

Manufacture: Set in Caxton’s gothic types and printed on a hand press in Westminster.

The dense gothic type and the Latin plea at the end: Supplico stet cedula – please leave this notice up.

Its small size – it was meant for church doors.
