A roman drawn for school books after research into how children read.

Century Schoolbook was based on legibility studies of the time and used in American readers throughout the 20th century. It remains a common type for legal texts in the United States. Proofs are in the Smithsonian.

Materials: Lead-alloy types

Manufacture: Benton gave the letters a large x-height, open forms and sturdy serifs to aid reading.

The large x-height and the clear, open letters.

The even, fairly strong contrast.
