Coromandel screen

The tall Chinese screen of carved and coloured lacquer exported to Europe.
The screen was made in China with thick layers of lacquer that were carved so that the motifs were incised and then painted. The name comes from the Indian coastal strip where the ships were loaded.
Coromandel screens came to Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries and were placed in French and English salons. They show the European interest in Chinese interiors.
