Commode by Cressent

Commode by Cressent, Charles Cressent
Daderot, Public domain

The bombé Rococo commode, where the bronze mounts are sculptures in their own right.

Charles Cressent (1685–1768) was both cabinetmaker and trained sculptor and modelled his own bronzes, which the guild forbade. Commodes by him are in the Wallace Collection in London and the Louvre.

Materials: Amaranth and satinwood veneer, gilt bronze, marble top

Manufacture: A bombé carcass veneered in contrasting woods; the bronze cast, chased and fire-gilt.

Bronze dragons, masks and foliage running across the whole front.

The drawers barely show – the front is a single composition.
