Daisy

One of Morris’s first wallpapers: simple clumps of daisies and meadow flowers on a light ground.
Daisy was developed for Red House and became one of the firm’s best-selling papers. It shows Morris’s early simple style before the dense scrolling patterns. Examples are in the Victoria and Albert Museum and the William Morris Gallery.
Materials: Paper, distemper
Manufacture: Hand-printed from woodblocks by Jeffrey & Co for Morris’s firm; the colours applied one at a time.
The sparsely scattered clumps of flowers, inspired by medieval embroidery.
The naive, direct expression – almost like a child’s drawing.
