Daum (fl. from 1878date QS:P,+1878-00-00T00:00:00Z/7,P580,+1878-00-00T00:00:00Z/9) / Jacqu, CC BY-SA 4.0

Etched cased glass with a winter landscape of bare trees in snow, Daum’s best-known motif.

Daum began making art glass in the 1890s and won a gold medal at the 1900 Exposition. The winter landscapes and forest scenes became the firm’s signature. Vases are in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Nancy and the Musée d’Orsay.

Materials: Cased glass, etched and enamelled

Manufacture: Several coloured layers were etched away with hydrofluoric acid to leave the trees; snow and sky painted in enamel.

The landscape round the whole vase – trees in front, a lighter sky behind.

The signature Daum Nancy with the Cross of Lorraine under the foot.
