Divan Japonais
Jane Avril in black in the audience, and the singer Yvette Guilbert cut off in the top corner.
The poster was made for a Japanese-style café-concert in Montmartre. The bold cropping makes it one of the most studied examples of poster art. Copies are in MoMA and the Art Institute of Chicago.
Materials: Colour lithograph on paper
Manufacture: Printed in four colours with spatter technique, crachis, for the speckled areas.
The singer cut off at the head – only the black gloves identify her.
The diagonal edge of the orchestra pit dividing the image, as in a Japanese woodcut.
