Toast rack by Christopher Dresser

Toast rack by Christopher Dresser
Hukin & Heath / Christopher Dresser, CC0

A toast rack of straight metal rods and spike-like feet – industrial design in 1878.

Dresser designed for several metalwork firms and let material and manufacture determine his forms. The toast racks look like 1920s Bauhaus though they are forty years older. Examples are in the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Metropolitan Museum.

Materials: Electroplated nickel silver

Manufacture: Made in series by Hukin & Heath of Birmingham from straight rods riveted and soldered.

The construction of straight rods without a single ornament.

The feet like short spikes, and Dresser’s name stamped beside the maker’s.
