Wallpaper by Christopher Dresser

A strictly stylised plant pattern in which Dresser’s botanical knowledge becomes geometry.
Dresser trained as a botanist and held that ornament should be based on the structure of plants, not their appearance. His wallpapers sold to middle-class homes in large numbers. Examples are in the Victoria and Albert Museum and Cooper Hewitt.
Materials: Paper, distemper, sometimes metallic paint
Manufacture: Printed by Jeffrey & Co, Wylie & Lochhead and others after Dresser’s designs.
The plants simplified into symmetrical, almost mechanical forms.
The influence of Japanese and Egyptian ornament.
