A square teapot that looks as if it came from the twentieth century, but was made in 1879.

Christopher Dresser was one of the first to call himself an industrial designer. He was inspired by Japanese metalwork after his journey to Japan and designed objects that could be made efficiently.

His teapots of 1879 look as if they had been made half a century later. They show that modern form did not begin with the Bauhaus.

Materials: Electroplated metal and ebony

Manufacture: Made by James Dixon & Sons in Sheffield.

The geometric body without ornament.

The spike feet that lift the pot off the table.

The angled handle, insulated with wood.
