A spinning disc with slits and sequential pictures that move when viewed in a mirror.

Plateau’s phenakistiscope and Stampfer’s stroboscope appeared at the same time in 1833 and were the first devices to show moving pictures. The discs became a popular toy. Examples are in the Science Museum and the Ghent University Museum.

Materials: Card, lithograph

Manufacture: The phases of a movement were printed in a ring; the disc was spun before a mirror and viewed through the slits.

The ring of almost identical figures in different phases of a movement.
