Cabinet by Ernest Gimson
A cabinet from the Cotswolds workshop: solid wood, visible joints and mother-of-pearl inlay.
Gimson’s workshop at Daneway House in the Cotswolds made only to order, with a handful of cabinetmakers. His furniture laid the foundation of English studio furniture. Collections are at The Wilson in Cheltenham and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Materials: Walnut or oak inlaid with ebony, mother-of-pearl or silver
Manufacture: Handmade in solid wood with dovetails and chamfered edges showing how the piece is built.
The dovetails are openly shown on the sides of the drawers.
Small inlays and chamfers instead of carving and mounts.
