A cheap pot cast in sand by Abraham Darby’s new method – iron became a kitchen material for everyone.

Darby’s pots made iron kitchenware cheap, and coke smelting paved the way for the Industrial Revolution. Examples are in the Ironbridge Gorge Museums.

Materials: Cast iron

Manufacture: In 1707 Darby patented casting thin pots in dry sand and smelted the iron with coke instead of charcoal.

The thick dark wall that holds heat evenly.

The legs and handles cast in one piece with the pot.
