Unknown artistUnknown artist, Public domain

A Romanesque candlestick in which little figures and dragons clamber through a net of foliage.

The candlestick was made for the Benedictine abbey at Gloucester under Abbot Peter. It is one of the finest pieces of English medieval metalwork. It is in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Materials: Gilt alloy of copper, silver and zinc

Manufacture: Cast in three parts by the lost-wax method and gilded; the figures openwork.

The openwork tangle of tendrils, with people and beasts seeming to move upwards.

The inscription recording that Abbot Peter of Gloucester had it made.
