Bamboo, Godwin’s wallpaper

An Anglo-Japanese wallpaper with bamboo stems and leaves in muted colours.
Godwin was a leading figure of the Anglo-Japanese style and the Aesthetic Movement. The paper shows how Japanese motifs were simplified for English homes. Examples are in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Materials: Paper, distemper
Manufacture: Hand-printed by Jeffrey & Co after E. W. Godwin’s design, in a few subdued colours.
The sparse, straight bamboo stems giving the wall air.
The greens and yellow-browns typical of the Aesthetic Movement.
