Gustavian candlestick
The candlestick as an antique column: fluted, straight and on a square base.
Gustavian candlesticks took their form from the columns of antiquity. The stem is fluted and the base square or round, often with beading and laurel wreaths.
The candlesticks were marked by the silversmith and assayed. With the marks it is often possible to say exactly in which year and in which town they were made.
Materials: Silver, often cast and raised
Manufacture: The parts are cast or raised and soldered together by the silversmith.
The stem as a fluted column.
Beading – a row of small balls – along the edge of the base.
The marks on the base: town, maker, control and date letter.
