Hampton Court Maze

Hampton Court Maze, George London and Henry Wise
Kris Arnold, CC BY-SA 2.0

The oldest surviving hedge maze in Britain, trapezoid in shape.

The maze was planted around 1700 for King William III by the gardeners George London and Henry Wise, who first made it of hornbeam. The hedges were later replaced by yew.

The maze is an example of the Baroque play with nature. Visitors try to find their way to the centre and out again.

Materials: Clipped yew hedges
