Commode by Georg Haupt

The Gustavian commode at its finest: straight-lined, with marquetry and gilt bronze.
Georg Haupt (1741–1784) worked in Amsterdam, Paris and London before becoming cabinetmaker to Gustav III. His furniture is counted the finest in Swedish cabinetmaking; several pieces are in the Nationalmuseum and the royal palaces.
Materials: Mahogany, rosewood and maple veneer in marquetry, gilt bronze, marble top
Manufacture: Marquetry with lozenges and swags, bronze mounts imported from Paris or cast in Stockholm.
Straight lines and tapering legs – the curves of the Rococo have gone.
Marquetry with flower baskets and trellis, a French technique Haupt had learned in Paris.
