Claire de Lune, Public domain

The gleaming chandelier with a ball and curving arms that hung in churches and burghers’ houses.

Chandeliers of this kind appear in Dutch 17th-century paintings of interiors. The type spread to churches throughout northern Europe, including Sweden. Examples are in the Rijksmuseum.

Materials: Cast and turned brass

Manufacture: The ball and knops of the stem were turned, the arms cast in S-shapes and fitted in tiers round the stem.

The large shining ball at the bottom, which reflects the candles and steadies the chandelier.

Arms in one or two tiers with drip pans and sockets.
