I ♥ NY

Milton Glaser’s logo of 1977 for New York State’s tourism campaign – a heart instead of a word.

In 1977 New York State launched a tourism campaign while the city was in financial crisis. Milton Glaser made the logo without fee and, by his own account, sketched it in a taxi.

It has been copied in countless variants for other cities and places. It is protected as a trademark, so only a drawing is shown.

Materials: Print on posters, clothing and souvenirs

Manufacture: Sketched on an envelope and printed in countless variants.

A red heart between the letters.

A rounded, heavy slab-serif type.

Two lines stacked in a square.
