İznik dish

İznik dish, Potters at İznik for the Ottoman court
Turkey; Iznik, Public domain

Ottoman fritware with tulips, carnations and the famous tomato red, in the court style.

Court designers in Istanbul drew the patterns that the potters of İznik painted. The tiles line the Topkapı Palace and the Süleymaniye Mosque. Dishes are in the British Museum, the Louvre and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Materials: Fritware with white slip, underglaze colours, lead glaze

Manufacture: A white, quartz-rich body painted in blue, turquoise, green and a raised bole red, under a clear glaze.

The thick, slightly raised red that only İznik’s finest period achieved.

Tulips and carnations bending to follow the shape of the dish.
