An English wine glass engraved with a rose and bud, a secret tribute to the exiled prince.

The Jacobites sought to restore the house of Stuart, and after the 1745 rising they secretly toasted ‘the king over the water’. The glasses carried hidden symbols. Examples are in the Victoria and Albert Museum and the National Museum of Scotland.

Materials: Lead glass

Manufacture: Blown lead glass with an air-twist stem; the rose and mottoes engraved with a wheel.

The rose with one or two buds – the Stuart crown and its heirs.

The motto FIAT, ‘let it be’, or an oak leaf and a star.
