Jane Avril, Jardin de Paris

The dancer Jane Avril on stage, framed by a double bass that becomes the poster’s border.
Toulouse-Lautrec and Jane Avril were friends, and she commissioned the poster herself. The frame shows how image and border merge in Art Nouveau graphics. Copies are in the Metropolitan Museum and the Bibliothèque nationale.
Materials: Colour lithograph on paper
Manufacture: Printed in five colours; the neck of the double bass continues as a frame round the image.
The neck of the double bass curling up to become the frame.
The dancer’s raised leg and swirling skirt in yellow and orange.
