Juicy Salif

The lemon squeezer that looks like a spider – and is mostly an idea.

Philippe Starck sketched the squeezer on a napkin in a restaurant, according to the story Alessi tells. It came out in 1990.

Juicy Salif has become a textbook example of postmodern design: an object that starts conversations more than it squeezes lemons.

Materials: Cast aluminium

Manufacture: Made by Alessi.

The ribbed drop on three long, bent legs.

The distance to the glass, which makes the juice splash.

The object as sculpture rather than tool.
