A wooden box with iron burrs, a crank on top and a small drawer for the ground coffee.

Coffee mills were in every home once coffee became an everyday drink in the 19th century. The form hardly changed for a hundred years until the electric grinder took over. Examples are in the Nordic Museum and the Deutsches Museum.

Materials: Wood (often beech or walnut), cast iron, brass

Manufacture: A conical iron grinder was mounted in a joined box; the fineness set with a screw.

The drawer catching the ground coffee.

The brass hopper under the crank where the beans are poured.
