Harlequin by Kändler
A Meissen figure from the commedia dell’arte, modelled with Rococo movement and humour.
Kändler (1706–1775) was Meissen’s modeller for over forty years, creating figures used as table decorations at court banquets instead of sugar and wax figures. The harlequins are among his best. Examples are in the Metropolitan Museum and the Porzellansammlung in Dresden.
Materials: Hard-paste porcelain painted in enamels
Manufacture: The model was divided into some twenty moulds; parts were pressed, assembled, fired and painted.
The chequered, colourful costume and the quick twisting movement.
The crossed swords in blue under the base.
