Kilta

A service without a service: pieces in simple forms that are bought one by one.

Kaj Franck wanted to get away from the large service with one object for every task. Kilta, launched in 1953, consisted of a few pieces in simple forms and colours that could be bought and combined freely.

The service was reworked in 1981 as Teema and is still made. It is one of the clearest examples of the Nordic idea that less can be more.

Materials: Earthenware in single-colour glazes

Manufacture: Factory-made by Arabia in Helsinki.

The basic forms: circle, square and cone.

Strong, simple colours that can be mixed.

No special coffee cups or sauce boats – the same bowl does for many things.
