Batholith (talk), Public domain

A turned wooden doll without arms or legs, with painted face and flowers, from northern Japan.

Kokeshi were sold to visitors at the hot springs of Tōhoku, and each town has its own style. They later inspired Scandinavian wood designers. Examples are in kokeshi museums in Japan and the British Museum.

Materials: Cherry or dogwood, paint

Manufacture: Body and head were turned separately and joined; the pattern painted while the doll spun on the lathe.

The simple cylindrical body and round head.

The stripes and flowers painted with a few brushstrokes.
