Moulin Rouge – La Goulue

The poster that made Toulouse-Lautrec famous and turned the street into a gallery.
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec made the poster for the Moulin Rouge nightclub in 1891. With flat areas of colour, strong outlines and cropped figures borrowed from Japanese woodblock prints, it differed from everything else on the streets of Paris.
The poster was pasted up all over the city and made Lautrec famous. It shows how art and advertising met around 1890.
