Liekki, the Flame ryijy

A Finnish ryijy rug with flames in red and orange, made for the Finnish pavilion in Paris in 1900.
Gallen-Kallela designed the rug for the Iris Room in the Finnish pavilion at the Paris Exposition. It revived interest in the ryijy as an art form and is still woven by the Friends of Finnish Handicraft. Examples are in the Design Museum in Helsinki.
Materials: Wool knotted on a woollen warp
Manufacture: Long knots in an open pattern, like the old Finnish ryijys; woven by Suomen Käsityön Ystävät.
The flames rising in red, orange and yellow against a dark ground.
The long pile that makes the colours soft and deep.
