Linnaean Garden

Uppsala University’s botanical garden, arranged by Carl Linnaeus after his system for classifying plants.
Olof Rudbeck the Elder laid out the university’s garden in 1655. When Linnaeus became professor he had it remodelled in 1745, and the plants were arranged by the number of stamens and pistils in their flowers.
The garden was a living teaching aid for students from all over Europe. It decayed in the 19th century but was recreated in the early 20th century following Linnaeus’s own plans.
Materials: Beds, pond, orangery
Manufacture: The plants were set in straight beds following Linnaeus’s sexual system; the garden was recreated after his plans in the 1920s.
Straight, narrow beds with one plant group in each.
