Linthorpe vase by Christopher Dresser

A vase with running, flowing glazes in forms from Peru, Japan and the Middle East.
Dresser was art director of Linthorpe Art Pottery in Middlesbrough in 1879–1882, a venture meant to give work to the unemployed. His forms were radical for their time. Examples are in the Dorman Museum in Middlesbrough and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Materials: Earthenware with running glazes in green and brown
Manufacture: Thrown or cast to Dresser’s designs; the glazes allowed to run and flow together in the firing.
The glazes that ran and mingled, making every piece different.
The shapes borrowed from pre-Columbian and Japanese vessels.
