Cutlery by Charles Rennie Mackintosh

Long, slender cutlery with stems widening into a flat, softly rounded end – without any ornament.

Mackintosh designed the cutlery for Miss Cranston’s tea rooms and for his own home in Glasgow. It shows how he thought of the whole, down to the fork. Examples are in the Hunterian Art Gallery in Glasgow and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Materials: Silver or nickel silver

Manufacture: Forged and ground; the stem rolled flat and the edge softly rounded.

The very long, slender stems widening towards the end.

The absence of any decoration, unusual in the cutlery of the time.
