Brightly coloured glossy glazes over relief of animals and plants, shown at the Great Exhibition of 1851.

Minton launched its majolica at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851. It became one of the great ceramic fashions of the Victorian age. Examples are in the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Minton Archive at Stoke-on-Trent.

Materials: Earthenware with coloured lead glazes

Manufacture: Moulded in deep relief and painted with thick transparent coloured glazes in a single firing.

The bright green, brown, turquoise and yellow glazes pooling in the hollows of the relief.

Animals and plants that are often the vessel itself – a teapot as a monkey, a dish as a leaf.
