Gertrude Jekyll's own garden, where the borders were planted like paintings.

Gertrude Jekyll laid out her garden at Munstead Wood in Surrey from the 1880s. The house was designed by Edwin Lutyens, with whom she then worked on many gardens.

She planned borders by colour like a painter. Her books on colour in the garden influenced gardens throughout the English-speaking world.

Materials: Perennials, shrubs, stone walls

Manufacture: Laid out and planted over many years.

The borders with cool colours at the ends and warm ones in the middle.

Plants in drifts, not in rows.

The interplay between garden and house.
