Neuland

Koch’s heavy, almost carved capitals, each size cut by hand without a drawing.

Neuland became popular for advertising and later for exotic and adventurous contexts. It shows the force of Expressionism in typography. Proofs are in the Klingspor Museum in Offenbach.

Materials: Lead-alloy types

Manufacture: Koch cut the punches directly in steel without a drawing, so each size came out slightly different.

The heavy, angular letters that look carved, as in a woodcut.

The letters almost fill their square – hardly any air.
