Tinker Hatfield was inspired by the Centre Pompidou in Paris, where the pipes and stairs are on the outside of the building. He cut a hole in the sole so that the air cushion was visible.
The Air Max 1 was a success and started a long series of Air Max shoes, which often return in new versions.
