The running shoe that became Nike’s first big success.

Bill Bowerman, the running coach at the University of Oregon, designed the shoe with a thick wedge-shaped midsole that cushioned the impact at the heel.

The Cortez became Nike’s first big hit and reached a wide public outside the running track. It is still made.

Materials: Nylon and suede, foam rubber in the sole

Manufacture: Launched by Nike in the USA in 1972.
