Noah’s Ark

The ark with pairs of animals from the Erzgebirge – the Sunday toy children were allowed to play with on the day of rest.

In the Erzgebirge in Saxony toy making became cottage work as the mines declined. Turners shaped wooden rings with an animal’s profile and split them into thin slices, which were then finished and painted.

Noah’s Ark was a Sunday toy: because it was based on a Bible story, children in devout homes were allowed to play with it on the day of rest.

Materials: Wood, paint

Manufacture: The animals were made by ring-turning: a wooden ring was turned with the animal’s profile and then split into many animals.

Animals in pairs, often of many species.
